A Night to
Remember 12/07/02 (2nd viewing) Forget Titanic. This movie is the best film
made about the doomed ocean liner. Based on the famous book by
Walter Lord this movie was made in 1958
without the use of a single computer. You don't need all kinds
of CGI effects. Just wait until you see the dessert cart rolling
through the First Class Dining Room and you'll see exactly what I mean. The cast is great, featuring Kenneth More as my favorite officer
of the Titanic, 2nd Officer Lightoller. This movie
doesn't fuck around. The first two minutes are about the
launching of the ship and whatnot and then BOOM! we're right to the
14th of April, the day it sank. The sets are INCREDIBLY good.
Beautiful work. The best part? No Celine Dion. In
fact, no soundtrack at all other than the music provided by the Titanic's band. Another plus is the fact that it's only two
hours. Do yourself a favor and pick up this movie but get the
Criterion Collection version because it's packed with extras including
a documentary about the making of the movie. 10 out of 10. |
Pumpkin 11/29/02 LOL! What a great
movie. Starring Christina Ricci, this comedy "for the
romantically challenged" seems like it was directed by Jimmy Fallon
after a hard night of drinking and Wes Anderson flicks. Here's a
few things Starsmars and I had to say while watching this gem:
"This movie is fucked in the head.", "Why is Beck wearing that
sombrero?", "He's going to go over that cliff Toonces style."
Basically Ricci plays a sorority chick who falls in love with her
charge from the Challenged Games. The comedy is bizarre. I
don't want to give away too much but I can tell you
I'll be buying this before the New Year. |

Monsters Inc. 10/29/02 Great movie by the people who
brought you A Bug's Life and Toy Story of course. The animation
in this movie is unreal! Sully's fur sets the standard for
computer graphics surely! But aside from the animation, the
story and writing are very clever. A great date flick. |

| Jackass: The Movie 10/28/02 If you don't laugh during this movie you can take your university degree and shove it up your ass. |

The Man Who
Wasn't There 10/23/02 Beautifully shot in black and
white, this "smoking movie" stars Billy Bob Thornton. Directed
by the Coens, The Man Who Wasn't There is a great thriller about a
simple man whose attempt at blackmail goes horribly wrong. Ed
Crane is my new hero! |

The Devil's
Brigade 10/19/02 (4th
viewing) This has finally come out on
DVD and once I find it in a store I'll buy it. This movie is
about The First Special Service Force; an experimental
brigade made up of Canadians and Americans. I've read that when
this movie was first released it was dismissed as a cheap knockoff of
the Dirty Dozen which is odd because this is based on a true story.
The First Special Service Force existed and it was the Germans who
dubbed them the Devil's Brigade because of their ferocity. You
can imagine my delight when I found out that a member of the brigade
was a member of my parish! Anyway, this is a great movie despite
the stereotypes. In fact, I'd say it was great because of them. |

Von Ryan's
Express 10/18/02 A nifty little WWII movie
starring Frank Sinatra. He hijacks a military train in an
attempt to get an entire POW camp out of Italy. |

| Sweet Home Alabama 10/12/02 Put a girl and a guy in a movie. If they kiss at the end, I'm happy. |

Koyaanisqatsi 10/05/02 Essentially a collection of
stock film footage set to a Philip Glass soundtrack. First in
the trilogy that includes
Powaqqatsi
and now
Naqoyqatsi. This film's slug line is "Life out of Balance.".
Powaqqatsi is "Life in Transformation" and Naqoyqatsi is "Life as
War." It's bizarre. I don't know how to describe or why to
recommend this film. I do recommend it though. It's the
kind of movie that everyone will have different ideas about I
guess. To me it showed what an amazing animal Man really is and
it reinforced my idea that while life may be common in the Universe,
intelligent life probably only exists here on Earth. |

Memento 10/04/02 Not a must rent, a must buy
because you'll need to see it again and again to figure it all out.
What an amazing movie. I'm sure you've heard about it or seen it
(I know I'm late to the party) but it's about a guy with no short term
memory trying to solve the murder of his wife. I won't say
anymore other than see this TODAY! |
