My Playlist Demographics

Preface

This is only my current playlist.  There was no way I was going to tally all 35 gigs of music on my computer.  And since I've only got a Shuffle, I knew it wouldn't take too long to tally the songs on it.  A sample size of 120 songs from a population of  6500 isn't very good science I admit.  If I were to tally my library I'm pretty confident it would be very representative of music from the 20th century.

The big question:  How many black artists do I listen to?  According to Excel, 17% of artists on my Shuffle aren't white.  Who's making the cut?  Sammy Davis Jr, Jay-Z, and Outkast among others.

How much music am I currently listening to that was penned before I was born?  Not very much apparently, although I think I should get extra points for having some pre-1940 music on my playlist.  Oh, George Formby you cad!

Cancon time.  And I didn't use that jerky MAPL system which can show Coldplay or the Beastie Boys as Canadian because their tour bus was made in Quebec.  I'm talking Canadian born artists.  4%.  I can't believe it's that high.  I'm even below the average.  Although the law states each radio station must play 30% Canadian artists, the average Canadian's music collection only contains about 10% Made in Canada artists.  The government's solution?  Let's up the mandated percentage to 50%!  That'll fix 'em.  Thank you government!  Is it any wonder I haven't turned on FM radio in about 8 years?

I kinda guessed this one going in.  I just prefer female vocals to male ones.  This is one trend I know would carry through my entire library because I actively seek out new female vocals.

Finally, a quick and dirty genre list that is really pretty much useless.  And ugly.  Dang.  You know that Mac templates look good.  If Steve Jobs saw that graph he'd take a sledgehammer to OS X.
