peter

I was meaning to post this awhile ago.  I want to introduce you to the child I sponsor.  His name is Peter and he lives in Bangladesh.  Every month about $30 CDN is deducted from my account and goes to Peter and his family.  It's pretty cool and I've been doing it for maybe a year now.  The name of the charity is Christian Child Care International.  You won't see them advertising on TV or anywhere else for that matter because all the money you donate goes to your sponsored child.  I mean check out their website and you'll see that they don't have a large operating budget.  I found out about it when a priest from Nova Scotia came to my parish and talked to the congregation after the mass.  That's the only way they let people know about their program.  Anyway, you can contact them and they will send you an information kit and then you can decide whether or not you want in.  You can choose a girl or a boy from a specific country.  I checked the "Whoever is most in need" box.   Once you have signed up they send you a photo of your child and a short bio.  Here's what I got:

Peter lives with his parents and two brothers on the outskirts of a small town in the Jessore region of Bangladesh.  In Bangladesh, there is widespread poverty.  Most Bangalees work as poor farmers, struggling to make a living on small plots of land.  Peter is in Grade One at A.G. Church Primary School, where he enjoys learning Banga, the mother tongue.  He also likes playing football.  Peter's father works buying and selling goats, but earns very little income.  The family lives in a small, two-room bamboo house.

You can write to your child and he or she will write back and let you know what is happening where they live.  You can even send little presents.  They advise against anything conspicuous because mail is often stolen in third world countries.  But little things like yarn or small books--anything that can fit into an envelope--are good.  I have written Peter and he has written me back.  The messages are translated for you.  I am only posting the original however.

I sent him some pencil crayons and he drew me these:

They'll even let you visit your child if you pay the airfare and get all the paperwork in order.

Anyway, overall it's been a great experience and it's something I enjoy.  We're so fat over here that it's nice to be able to help someone else.  What does it cost me?  One less DVD a month.  If you're interested, there's no obligation in getting the information package.  Just check out their website, e-mail them,  or write to them:
